How it all began:

Originating in the hot springs of Turkey, Wonder Fish spa treatment has been used for more than 400 years. The Wonder Fish, or as they are also known Garra Rufa fish, or Doctor Fish, are renowned for their cleansing abilities. They are attracted to and feed on the dead and unhealthy skin cells on the human body and leave only the soft exfoliated skin beneath. Because of the effectiveness of the treatment, Wonder Fish has also become popular in treating skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema.

Wonder Fish / Doctor Fish / Garra Rufa fish:

Whilst there is a number of imitation fish similar to the Garra Rufa, there is only one genuine species which can be found in its native homeland of Turkey. Since 1996 there has been an export restriction on the fish due to their popularity and depletion in numbers, and to preserve the species it is no longer legal to remove them from their natural spas.

At WonderFish we have genuine Garra Rufa fish that have been bred by a licensed provider. Each fish is individually checked to ensure it is healthy and strong, so we can guarantee a safe and reliable spa treatment to all our clients.

The Garra Rufa is a tiny fish that grows to approximately 5cm. They prefer dead skin cells to living skin cells because they are easier to nibble on.

What's involved?

At WonderFish we have individual tanks which each house 200 fish. The water temperature is maintained between 28 - 31°c with a pH level between 7 - 8, which is comparable to their natural habitat.

The toothless Garra Rufa fish feed on dead, diseased or scabby skin. As the scaly skin is softened in the warm spa water the Garra Rufa fish gently nibble and suck the skin releasing an enzyme called diathanol which leaves the feet feeling soft and smooth, and helps improve skin regeneration.

This natural exfoliant is safe and effective. The fish haven't got any teeth so the treatment isn't painful, and it can be a pleasant experience once you have relaxed into the treatment.

Using just constantly filtered and sterilized water this form of spa treatment is safe and hygienic. From the moment you step into our comfortable waiting area you will feel calm and relaxed.

Cleanliness is one of our key priorities and all our clients are required to wash their feet before using the spa treatment. To maintain our high hygiene standards we provide each client with a clean towel and allocate one person per treatment tank. The water is continuously filtered and sterilized removing any impurities and leaving the water fresh and clean.

Who can have a WonderFish spa treatment?

Anyone can enjoy a WonderFish spa treatment. It is a fun way to get smooth, soft feet and has been used to treat the symptoms of skin conditions for many years.

If you have a cut or an open wound we would ask you to wait until it is healed before you have the treatment. Please inform one of our treatment therapists if you have any verrucas or warts, and ensure they are clean and free from any treatment agents, before using the treatment tanks.
